FPL REQUEST RATE HIKE
Florida Power and Light has asked the state for a major rate hike, but before regulators agree, they have to hear from customers. FPL wants a 31 percent increase over the next two years. For  the average customer it means their base rate would go up about 12 dollars a month. For FPL it means about 1 billion dollars.  The Public Service Commission is holding two meetings today.

CARIBBEAN AMERICAN HERITAGE CELEBRATION

CREDIT UNION TAKEOVER
A popular credit union, Eastern Financial Florida Credit Union acquired by Melbourne based, Space Coast Credit Union. The acquisition doubles the size of “Space Coast Credit Union”. Regulators took over Eastern Financial in April after it major losses in loans. Space Coast has been running it since April.  The takeover means “Space Coast Credit Union” is now the third largest in Florida, with more than 360-thousand members, 60 branches and 145 ATMS statewide.
 
FAMU BUDGET CUTS
The budget ax falling at Florida A & M University. Trustees approved a 16.2 million dollars in budget cuts for the coming school year.  Some staff positions, about 120, will be eliminated. It’s unclear which ones. Federal economic stimulus money is expected to temporarily save about 74 of those jobs.
 
DUNBAR VILLAGE SUSPECTS
Three of the suspects charged in the rape and attack of a mother and son in Dunbar Village, ordered to have finger and palm prints taken — despite the objections of their attorney. They’ve also been ordered to give handwriting samples. Avion Lawson and Jakaris Taylor, along with Nathan Walker are set to stand trial in August. In 2007 they allegedly attacked the woman and her son and forced her to have sex with him.
