MOURNING FATHER GERARD JEAN-JUSTE
South Floridians are mourning the death of a key leader in the Haitian community: Father Gerard Jean Juste. For 30 years he was at the forefront of the fight for equal rights for Haitian immigrants. He had a stroke. Father Gerard Jean-Juste was 62.
 
SURVIVING A STORM
Hurricane season is almost here. It starts Monday, June 1st.  Get ready. Our media partner, Channel 7 is ready to help with a special, Saturday night at 8, “Surviving a Storm”.
 
BOGUS KIDNAPPING
A storm of controversy now surrounding the suburban Philadelphia mom who called 911 seven times claiming she and her daughter had been kidnapped, thrown in the trunk of a Cadillac by 2 Black men. An Amber Alert was put into effect, the FBI was called in and police were on high alert, stopping virtually any Black man in a dark colored Cadillac in the Philadelphia area.  Bonnie Sweeten and her daughter were found alive and well in Orlando at Disney World. This morning we’re learning there are questions about whether she may have embezzled $300,000 dollars from her employer.

FAMU TUITION INCREASE
Tuition will cost more at Florida A & M University starting this fall. The Board of Trustees just approving an 8 percent increase for in-state students AND an extra fee, 7 percent – called a tuition differential.  The original date of enrollment is a key factor in how much a student’s tuition will increase.
 
BROWARD PROSECUTOR’S HUSBAND BUSTED
A Broward prosecutor, Elizabeth Scherer-Mercer resigning after her husband, Anthony Mercer, is arrested for allegedly dealing drugs, cocaine.  The Sun Sentinel reporting when he bonded out of jail last Friday, she filed for divorce. The couple has a 3 year old daughter.
 
U.S./ JAMAICA TASK FORCE
In other news, the U.S. and Jamaica are creating a task force to deal with a major scam. A caller tells you you’ve won millions in an overseas lottery, but you need to send a few hundred dollars to cover the taxes. The scam has been very successful with criminals in Nigeria. Con artists in Jamaica are now making a fortune with the scam. Last year Americans sent them 30 million dollars.
