Don’t be Evil is the motto of the all spying eye, as Google sinks money into another industry outside of search engines. I commented on the satellite that was launched back in September 2008 that would give Google unprecedented satellite images of the world and you have all seen Google maps Street View but now prying into the homes through electrical mapping.
This could potentially lead to much more if the technology was to utilize microwave technology to oscillate the lines in your home detecting which room you were in or to assist mapping software with a peak inside your home from satellite.
Update: Good story here (or here) about the reasons for the power line investment by Google, written by our colleague Sam Diaz. One main reason: faster “upload” speeds.
Meanwhile, reality checks here by Mike and Om.
Cute little quip here by John Paczkowski of GMSV, on the bizarre notion that Google’s investment in Current Communications, a company that installs broadband over power lines, could some day lead to a mapping of the power lines of your house.
Along with Goldman Sachs and Hearst, Google is investing about $100 million in Current.
